When Headway was founded, we were just five people in a room with an ambitious idea: to build a new mental healthcare system that everyone could access. When I founded Headway, it wasn’t as an entrepreneur with a business idea. It was as a patient who knew firsthand the struggle of navigating our broken mental health system. My own journey with mental health care showed me how difficult it was to find the right therapist, how overwhelming it felt to sift through endless phone numbers and dead ends, and how deeply frustrating the experience could be for anyone seeking help.

Today marks a key step toward realizing our mission to build a new mental healthcare system that everyone can access. We’re proud to announce our expansion to Medicare Advantage and Medicaid, leveraging our recent $100 million Series D funding. This means opening the door to great care for millions more people in need.

As the year comes to a close, we are thrilled to share that Headway is now serving people in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Today, I’m excited to announce a significant step in our mission to build a new mental healthcare system that everyone can access. We’ve raised an additional $125 million in a Series C fundraising round, led by Spark Capital and supported by existing investors Accel, Thrive, and Andreessen Horowitz. Spark’s General Partner Will Reed will be joining our Board of Directors, bringing invaluable experience helping technology-led businesses scale. We’ve also welcomed new strategic investors, led by Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC).

Headway is starting the year off strong with the addition of mental health industry veteran Dr. Nicole Christian-Braithwaite, and tech veteran Matt Hackett, to Headway’s leadership team. With a growing slate of seasoned leaders, Headway is positioned to continue its positive growth trajectory as the market-leading mental health care company.

In its latest effort to address critical mental health needs in North Carolina, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) today announced it is expanding its network of behavioral health providers through a collaboration with Headway, a mental health care company that works with insurers to deliver high-value mental health care. Together the two companies will make it easier for Blue Cross NC members to quickly access – as soon as 48 hours – in-network therapists and psychiatrists who meet their specific needs.

Headway, creator of the first full-stack software-enabled national network of therapists, today announced its collaboration with Horizon Healthcare Services, Inc. (Horizon), and will be an in-network provider group available for commercially insured members of New Jersey’s oldest and largest health insurer. This arrangement will help to improve patient experience for Horizon plan members seeking a mental health clinician to meet their needs. Over half of the 1 in 5 Americans with a treatable mental health condition do not get access to care.

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve closed our $70 million Series B funding round at a $750 million valuation. Our round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Thrive, GV and Accel. On the heels of our Series A this past October, this investment reflects the burgeoning demand for affordable mental healthcare, and the confidence our investors have in our approach to deliver access to quality care at scale.

As part of moving to NYC in 2015, I tried to find a therapist and failed—failed for the same reason that the majority of the one in four Americans with a treatable mental health condition such as depression fail to find care. I couldn’t find a therapist that I could afford because 70% of therapists don’t accept insurance. Headway is solving this problem by building the first national network of therapists who accept insurance. Because Headway’s free software for therapists handles all the work to accept insurance, two out of three providers that you’ll find on our platform don’t accept insurance anywhere else.
