Between credentialing, meeting state requirements, and finding patients, it’s easy to feel stuck before you’ve even seen your first client. Headway helps psychiatric providers — psychiatrists (MD/DO) and psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) — go from credentialed to patient-ready in as little as 30 days.

This guide walks you through what your first month with Headway can look like. We’ll cover the prescriber-specific requirements you’ll want to check off before you start, and show you how we make each step smoother so you can focus on the most important part of your work: caring for your patients.

What to expect in your first 30 days

When you join Headway, we make it easy to go from onboarding to seeing patients quickly and confidently. Because Headway is built with psychiatrists in mind, our process covers the details that matter most, like best practices for e-prescribing, state licensure requirements, and collaborating physician arrangements.

From day one, you’ll have a clear checklist, dedicated onboarding specialists, and resources designed specifically for psychiatric practices.

Weeks 1 to 2: Set the foundation.

Before you can start seeing patients, it’s important to have your key qualifications and systems in place. Here’s where to begin:

  • Ensure your DEA license is active. It’s required for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Obtain board certification, like from the ANCC or other recognized psychiatric certification.
  • Get malpractice insurance with coverage for both in-person and virtual visits.
  • Establish a collaborating physician if it’s required by your state. (Headway can guide and connect you here.)
  • Finalize your systems setup, such as your EMR, e-prescribing tool, and telehealth platform. Headway integrates seamlessly into your practice or can recommend options for you.
  • Review (or establish) all necessary practice policies, such as your informed consent and good faith estimate forms.
  • When you join with Headway, review our policies, such as the controlled substances policy.

Because Headway is built for psychiatrists, we’ve streamlined these steps with psychiatry in mind. So by the end of week two, your legal, clinical, and technical foundations are set, and you’re ready to start building your patient presence.

Practice in-network with confidence

Simplify insurance and save time on your entire workflow — from compliance and billing to credentialing and admin.

Week 3: Build your presence.

With your foundation in place, the next step is making it easy for patients to find and connect with you:

  1. Create or refresh your Psychology Today profile to highlight your services, credentials, and availability.
  2. Activate your Headway profile so you’re visible to patients across insurance networks that you’re credentialed with.
  3. List every insurance plan you accept, including all Headway-supported plans you’re credentialed with to maximize reach.
  4. Add a welcoming bio and professional photo to both Psychology Today and Headway.
  5. Set up booking links so patients can request appointments without delay.

Once you’ve completed these steps, be sure to turn on notifications for patient inquiries. Responding quickly not only makes a strong first impression but also helps ensure patients receive the care they need. You can also decide if you want your Headway platform to allow patients to schedule consultations directly on your calendar, or if you'd prefer to manage that process.

Week 4: Go live and see your first patients.

Your profiles are live, credentialing is complete, and your schedule is open. By this week, you’re ready to welcome patients — virtually or in-person.

Headway connects you with patients whose insurance you accept, so you can focus on providing care instead of chasing leads. Whether you’re starting part-time or full-time, this is the moment your practice can become real, sustainable, and profitable.
